How to make your sketch map

  1. Colour: Fill tool, pick a colour, then click an area (country, sea…). Hatching works the same way and can sit on top of a fill. Graduated is for maps by classes (densities, rates…).
  2. Name: Label tool, click the map, type the text then press Enter (Shift+Enter for a new line).
  3. Draw: Line / arrow (click and drag), Curved line for sea routes (one click per point, double-click to finish), Freehand, Custom area to draw an area that isn't on the base map.
  4. Symbol: ports, cities, bases… pick a shape then click. Proportional symbol: the size depends on a value.
  5. Legend: To legend tool, click a map symbol on your sketch map and it is added to the active section of the Legend tab, where you write its caption. Organise the legend into sections.
  6. Hand in: Export PNG (image) and upload the file wherever your teacher asked.

Tips

Base map in PDF?

The browser can't colour a PDF: convert it to SVG first.

For each area to colour in one click, every country or sea must be a separate closed shape in the SVG. A PNG/JPG image can also be used as a base map, but it can't be coloured by clicking (use Custom area instead).

Teacher area

Load your base map with Base map…, write the instructions, then download the student version: a single HTML file that contains your base map. Students open it in Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, with nothing to install and no account.
